Many people do not realize how important is a question: Where am I going to live? At this point, you probably already have decided to immigrate to or have received a visa and medical forms in your hands. Ask yourself one more time: What do I know about my destination? What the reason to go there; relatives, friends, big city, climate, job, anything else? Most of the people put job on first priority.

RECENT NEWS ABOUT ALBERTA WORKER SHORTAGE

Alberta Employment minister says labour shortage could worsen
By The Canadian Press - June 19, 2008

EDMONTON — Alberta’s employment minister says the province’s labour shortage could worsen over the next decade. Hector Goudreau says the province could find itself short 110,000 workers unless government and industry start thinking of new ways to attract and retain workers.

Goudreau told a meeting of health-care workers Thursday that one of the causes of the shortage is the aging workforce. He says the situation in the health sector will be even more challenging because the province will need to compete with the rest of Canada to get people.

He made the comments prior to announcing a new provincial immigration initiative that would allow Albertans to fast-track family members with a post-secondary education and work experience to come here. The province is currently between 30,000 to 40,000 workers short in all fields of employment.

“It becomes urgent when businesses are closed,” he said. “When a businessman says, ‘I lost $4 million because I didn’t have enough people.’ We are hearing that.”

The province has a variety of employment and immigration programs set up, he said, which include everything from getting more disabled people back at work, to getting older workers off the front line of the labour force and into managerial positions.

Included in that is a strategy on the part of the province to recruit workers from other parts of Canada who want to move to Alberta, he added.
Under the new Alberta Immigrant Nominee Program, the sponsored family member must be between 21 and 45 years old, but does not need to have a job lined up before they apply.

Citizenship and Immigration Canada will make the final decision on permanent resident applications and nominees will still need to pass security and health checks.

Hugh MacDonald, Liberal employment and immigration critic, said the government has to do more to attract permanent workers from other parts of the country like Ontario.

“I think we should aggressively recruit laid-off workers in the industrial heartland, in Ontario,” he said.
